Thermostatic shower taps often fail due to their thermostatic cartridges being affected by hard water deposits or pressure imbalances. Most thermostatic shower taps are required to have pressure equalising valves installed to stop such damage, however, pressure equalising valves are generally not installed in the domestic environment. This is usually down to either a lack awareness of the item or their perceived unnecessary additional cost at the time of installation of the thermostatic shower.
Unfortunately, many manufacturers of thermostatic shower taps have discontinued models and valve mixer spares prove hard if not impossible to source. This leaves the end user with potentially a two fold problem;
1. Replacement cartridges are not available, thus making the whole appliance useless
2. Due to the differing methods of water supply to thermostatic shower mixer valves (different input spacing and pipe diameters etc.) Meaning straightforward replacement is generally nigh on impossible.
Worst case scenario is that the whole installation, thermostatic shower valve, pipe-work and tiling have to be removed and a new shower installed, which would prove a costly and frustrating solution.
Albion’s pressure balanced shower valve mixer utilises a ¾” supply body with head works designed to match either Amie or Beaufort bath shower mixer and tap models.
